The 1st Edition of the ASEAN Biodiversity Outlook (ABO 1), published by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) in 2010, provides the first comprehensive regional assessment of biodiversity status and trends in Southeast Asia in relation to the Convention on Biological Diversity’s 2010 Biodiversity Target. Drawing on the Fourth National Reports of all ten ASEAN Member States, it consolidates national data into a unified regional knowledge base, enabling cross-country comparison of biodiversity status, pressures, and responses. The report underscores ASEAN’s global ecological importance—covering about 3% of the Earth’s surface but supporting roughly 18% of assessed species—and documents widespread declines across forests, agricultural landscapes, inland waters, and marine and coastal ecosystems. It confirms that the region did not meet the 2010 target, citing significant losses, including 555,587 km² of forest (1980–2007), a 26% decline in mangroves (1980–2005), and about 40% coral reef loss. Key drivers identified include habitat conversion, climate change, invasive alien species, over-exploitation, pollution, and socio-economic pressures. The Outlook also synthesizes regional responses, such as protected area expansion, the ASEAN Heritage Parks Programme, and transboundary initiatives, and provides recommendations to strengthen cooperation, mainstream biodiversity into development, and enhance implementation. Spatial coverage: All ten ASEAN Member States, across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems in mainland and insular Southeast Asia. Temporal coverage: Based on national data from approximately 1980–2007, assessing progress toward the 2010 Biodiversity Target and establishing a pre‑2010 baseline. Overall, ABO 1 integrates national information into a coherent regional assessment, supporting evidence-based decision-making and coordinated biodiversity action in ASEAN. |
