The ASEAN Heritage Parks Programme was established in 1984 to provide a regional framework for the preservation of Southeast Asia’s most ecologically significant protected areas. The programme promotes transboundary collaboration to protect representative ecosystems, conserve biodiversity, and foster regional pride by recognizing areas with outstanding wilderness, unique biodiversity, and high conservation value. The ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity currently serves as the programme’s secretariat, overseeing a network that expanded from 11 protected areas in 1984 to more than 69 sites by October 2025. Recognized sites must meet criteria on ecological completeness, naturalness, and ethnobiological significance, while management actions include capacity‑building initiatives, harmonized regional action plans, and triennial conferences for sharing best practices; support your local heritage parks by participating in regional conservation awareness campaigns and sustainable tourism initiatives. |
