The Biodiversity Assessment and Monitoring System (BAMS) for Terrestrial Ecosystems is a standardized methodology developed to provide Protected Area Superintendents and field implementers with science-based tools for assessing and monitoring terrestrial biodiversity in the Philippines. Issued through DENR Technical Bulletin No. 2016-05, BAMS was developed pursuant to Republic Act No. 7586 (NIPAS Act of 1992) and Republic Act No. 9147 (Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001) to ensure effective management of habitats and species within protected areas, critical habitats, and other terrestrial conservation areas. BAMS comprises four major assessment components: physical assessment, flora assessment, fauna assessment, and analysis and database management, utilizing a minimum two-kilometer transect representative of forest formations present in protected areas. The system establishes permanent monitoring transects and plots to be surveyed every five years after baseline assessment, with immediate monitoring required following catastrophic events such as typhoons and volcanic eruptions. BAMS complements other existing monitoring tools including the Biodiversity Monitoring System (BMS) and the LAWIN Forest and Biodiversity Protection System, supporting the formulation and updating of Protected Area Management Plans and State of Protected Areas Reports.
