The Biodiversity Monitoring System (BMS) Manual for Protected Areas is a standardized monitoring methodology developed to improve information available for decision-makers in Philippine protected areas through the regular collection of data on natural biological resources and their utilization. The system was developed by the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in collaboration with NORDECO under the Technical Assistance for Improving Biodiversity Conservation in Protected Areas, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark (Danida). The manual provides guidance for Protected Area Superintendents, PA staff, local communities, deputized forest guards, and volunteer groups to implement standardized monitoring methods in support of the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) Act of 1992. The BMS comprises four main field methods: Focus Group Discussion, Field Diary, Photo Documentation, and Transect methods (Walk, Cruise, and Swim) applicable across land, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. The system follows a ten-step implementation process from compiling baseline information to revising the monitoring system, with data analyzed quarterly and presented to the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) for management decision-making. The methodology monitors indicator species including Philippine Eagle, hornbills, deer, wild pigs, and marine species such as giant clams and sea cucumbers, alongside resource use indicators.
