Burungnesia is Indonesia's largest citizen science application for bird observation and distribution mapping, developed by Birdpacker Indonesia. Launched in 2016, the mobile application enables bird-watchers across the Indonesian archipelago to record, store, and manage field observation data, contributing to a centralized national database on avian biodiversity. The platform serves as a critical tool for researchers, academics, students, and government agencies, with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia using Burungnesia data as a primary reference for reviewing species protection regulations and CITES Appendix revisions. As of April 2024, Burungnesia has accumulated over 270,000 record rows documenting 1,873,295 individual birds counted across 1,484 species from more than 37,100 coordinate points contributed by over 6,000 observers. The platform has facilitated significant scientific discoveries, including the rediscovery of the critically endangered black-browed babbler (Malacocincla perspicillata), a species unseen for 170 years. Burungnesia also provides a photographic field guide covering 639 species with 1,427 images, supporting species identification and conservation education. Access and contribute to Burungnesia to support evidence-based bird conservation and biodiversity monitoring across Indonesia.
