This publication, developed by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) under the BCAMP project with support from the European Union, provides a regional baseline assessment of Critically Endangered land and freshwater vertebrate species in ASEAN. It serves as a knowledge resource to support evidence-based policymaking, regional cooperation, and conservation prioritization aligned with ASEAN biodiversity frameworks. The report covers 221 ASEAN Species Action Plan (ASAP) species, of which about 65% show declining population trends and 195 are endemic to the region. It synthesizes regional data on species status, distribution, threats, and conservation gaps, identifying habitat loss, unsustainable offtake, and wildlife trafficking as key pressures, with approximately 66% of species affected by overharvesting. It outlines priority actions, including strengthening area-based conservation, improving policy and governance, and mobilizing sustainable financing to address species decline. Spatial coverage: All ASEAN Member States, spanning terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems across mainland and archipelagic Southeast Asia. Temporal coverage: Based on the most recent data available up to 2020, providing a current snapshot of species status and trends. Overall, the publication consolidates fragmented regional data into a unified assessment, supporting cross-country comparison and coordinated action to halt biodiversity loss in ASEAN. |
