Kupunesia is a citizen science mobile application developed for the identification and recording of butterflies across Indonesia, available for free on the Google Play Store since 1 November 2022. The name derives from ""kupu-kupu"" (butterfly in Indonesian) and ""-nesia"" (Indonesia), following the naming convention of its predecessor Burungnesia. The application was developed to address data gaps in butterfly research caused by limited research personnel capacity, budget constraints, and challenging access to Indonesia's estimated 17,500 islands, supporting the goal of national data sovereignty for Indonesian butterfly species. Indonesia hosts an estimated over 2,200 butterfly species with approximately 5,000 subspecies, including about 650 endemic species representing the highest number of endemic butterfly species globally. Within seventeen months of launch, Kupunesia achieved over 1,000 downloads with the Identification Field Guide containing 1,672 photographs covering 998 species contributed by 122 photographers. The platform has already contributed to new distribution records, including Melanitis phedima and Papilio demolion from Sumbawa Island. Access and contribute to Kupunesia to support accelerated butterfly data acquisition and conservation planning across the Indonesian archipelago. |
