The Philippine Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), Atlases, and Red List Assessments comprise a suite of knowledge products developed by the Biodiversity Management Bureau in collaboration with conservation NGOs to identify priority sites and species for biodiversity conservation in the Philippines. The KBA initiative, which began in 2006 with terrestrial sites and expanded to marine areas in 2009, has identified 228 KBAs covering both terrestrial and marine ecosystems using criteria based on globally threatened species, restricted-range species, and congregatory species, with current reassessment ongoing to align with the 2016 IUCN Global Standard for KBA Identification. As of February 2026, 42.53% of existing KBAs are within protected areas, with 96 of 128 KBAs located within indigenous peoples' ancestral domains. The World Database of KBAs currently recognizes 139 KBA sites in the Philippines including 117 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs). Red List assessments document threatened species using IUCN criteria, supporting conservation prioritization and species action planning. These knowledge products directly support the 30x30 target under KMGBF Target 3 and serve as indicators for SDGs 14 and 15 measuring protected area coverage of KBAs in marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
